A 57-year-old taxi driver died and four others were injured after he lost control of the vehicle and plowed into pedestrians walking on a footpath at Mahim west on Wednesday evening. Police suspect the deceased taxi driver, Rajpati Dubey, may have suffered a heart attack while at the wheel.

According to Mahim police, the incident took place at around 6:30 pm, as Dubey was driving away after filling gas from a petrol pump near Paradise cinema. The cab swung onto a footpath, running over four pedestrians. The police said residents immediately informed the police and all five injured were rushed to two hospitals.

Dubey was declared dead-on-arrival due to head injuries. He and 40-year-old Rajendra Kumar were sent to Bhabha Hospital in Bandra for treatment, while a 24-year-old woman, Pratibha Waghmare, and a 14-year-old boy Adnan were sent to P D Hinduja Hospital. Two of the injured are still in the hospital. Dr Pradeep Jadhav from Bhabha Hospital said, "Rajendra Kumar has few fractures."

"Two patients were brought to Hinduja for treatment," the on-duty medical officer at PD Hinduja Hospital said, "They suffered minor injuries and were discharged. The woman underwent an X-ray, but everything was normal. She suffered minor injuries on her right leg. The boy also had few minor injuries on his leg and was discharged after treatment."

"We have registered a case of rash driving and suspect that Dubey may have had a cardiac arrest while driving," said Milind Idekar, senior police inspector of Mahim Police Station, "Besides the taxi driver, four persons sustained injuries, of whom two were discharged after the treatment from Hinduja hospital. There were no passengers in the taxi when the accident took place. The exact cause of death will be known only after we get the postmortem report."
