While allowing the Durga idol immersion on Muharram, the Calcutta High Court had slammed Mamata Banerjee government and said, 'You are exercising extreme power without any basis...Just because you are the state, can you pass arbitrary order?'
Even after the Calcutta High Court overturned Mamata Banerjee's ban on Durga idol immersion on Muharram, it seems there won't be any visarjan on October 1.
The reason is not a single Durga Puja Pandal has applied for the immersion request on Muharram. There are 25,000 Durga Puja pandals across West Bengal.
“There are about 25,000 community pujas in all the districts put together. So far there has not been a single application for immersion permission on October 1,” ADG (law and order) Anuj Sharma said on Friday.
State capital Kolkata also witnessed similar trend. “There are about 2,600 pujas in Kolkata. No puja organiser has sought permission from the Kolkata Police for immersion on October 1, which is Ekadashi, which coincides with Muharram,” said a senior Lal Bazar official.
“If there is any case where people try to take idols for immersion without taking permission, steps would be taken in accordance with the High Court order,” he added.
BJP national secretary and former state president Rahul Sinha said the situation has been engineered by the ruling Trinamool Congress along with the police and local administration.
“Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her brigade are out threatening puja organisers. Most of the puja are patronised by the TMC leaders. Clubs get an annual grant from the state which they might not receive if they dont comply. Few which remain have been given strict verbal instructions by police not to apply on October 1 as immersion date,” Sinha told the DNA.
He also said that the Trinamool wanted to curb the right of the people to immerse Durga idol on October 1 and they had objected to it.
“People’s rights have been established. Now it is up to them to decide if they want to do it on October 1. BJP is not instigating anyone,” he added.
The state police said they have pin-pointed certain areas including Indo-Bangla bordering areas where other than police posting they have also deployed policemen in plain clothes who would keep an eye on potential trouble makers.
Sources at Nabanna, the state secretariat had said that according to the High Court ruling, only if ‘conditions is permissible’ permission for immersion would be granted and that has been followed.
