Selfie craze killed four and injured one at Patuapara of Liluah in Howrah district at about 7.15 pm on Thursday. Five friends were aboard on a Howrah-Bandel local train towards Bandel returning from Tarakeshwar temple.

Eyewitnesses said they were in an inebriated state and were taking selfies and groupfies when the phone slipped and fell. At that time they were between Liluah and Belur. One of them, Tarak Manna jumped out of the moving train in order to retrieve the phone. Makal got hit by a lamppost and fell beside the tracks.

When the train stopped at Belur the other four — Sumit Kumir, Sanjiv Poley, Chandan Poley and Kajal Chandra Saha — disembarked and started running back towards the spot where Manna had fallen.

At that time another train, Up Goghat Local coming from the opposite direction mowed down three and one went flying off the track at a distance after getting hit.

Three of them were declared brought dead at the Liluah Rail Hospital and one succumbed to his injuries early this morning. The bodies have been sent for a post mortem.

Howrah Rail Police confirmed the incident but were not ready to attribute the death to taking selfies.

"Three bodies were found on the railway track on Thursday and another injured man was rescued few metres away from the tracks. Three of them died while trying to cross the track. It is not yet certain whether the accident had anything to do with taking selfies," said Niladri Chakraborty, SRP (Howrah).

Police sources also said only after interrogating Manna it would be known what had exactly happened.

"There are areas where photography is prohibited but people don't follow. We have not only identified and fined people but appealed to them through print, electronic and social media not to take photographs or use phone while crossing the railway tracks," said Eastern Railway CPRO Ravi Mahapatra.
