Former Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabir passed away on Sunday after prolonged illness. The former CJI had not been well for some time.
He was in a critical condition and was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Kolkata. The hospital confirmed the news of his death in the afternoon, saying he passed away at 2:52 pm.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condoled his death.

Former Supreme Court judge Ashok Ganguly, who was present at the hospital, said that Kabir had been suffering from a kidney-related ailment.
He was Acting Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court in 2005. Kabir, 68, was appointed the 39th Chief Justice of India on September 29, 2012, a post he held for 292 days, before his retirement on July 19, 2013.
