Former Andhra governor ND Tiwari's condition critical after contracting fever in hospital

ND Tiwari, who has served as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, and as the governor of Andhra Pradesh, on Monday was admitted to New Delhi’s Max Super Specialty Hospital in New Delhi after he contracted fever due to an unknown infection.

ND Tiwari, who has served as Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, and as the governor of Andhra Pradesh, on Monday was admitted to New Delhi’s Max Super Specialty Hospital in New Delhi after he contracted fever due to an unknown infection.

In a statement released by his office, Tiwari’s heart rate became irregular due to the illness and his blood pressure dropped to dangerously low levels.

The 92-year-old was immediately rushed into the ICU of the Delhi Hospital where his condition is stated to be critical.

A team of doctors led by neurologist Dr J D Mukherjee and cardiologist Dr Sumit Sethi are observing Tiwari’s vitals. “His son Rohit Shekhar has been told that the next 48 to 72 hours will be crucial to Tiwari.”

In 2017, Tiwari had been admitted to hospital after suffering a brain stroke in September. He has been in hospital since then.

Tiwari was thrice Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh (1976–77, 1984–85, 1988–89) and once Chief Minister of Uttarakhand (2002–2007). In 1986–1987, he served in Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's cabinet as Minister for External Affairs. He was serving as Governor of Andhra Pradesh from 2007 until 2009. He's the only Indian to have served as Chief Minister of two states.

His initiation into politics came early, when during the Indian Independence movement, he was arrested on 14 December 1942 for writing Anti-British leaflets opposing imperialist policies, and sent to Nainital jail, where his father was already lodged.

On January 18, 2017, Tiwari gave blessings and his support along with his son Rohit to Narendra Modi and the BJP for the assembly elections held in the states of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh in presence of BJP President Amit Shah in the name of Development,
