A day after Congress president Rahul Gandhi led a candle-light march at midnight at India Gate to protest against the incidents of rape in Kathua and Unnao, the party has now called upon its leaders across the country to hold similar candle-light demonstrations in all state and district headquarters.

The party is trying to build up a national movement from the horror at the incidents in both BJP-ruled states. Instructions to state units have been sent which directed workers to carry out protest marches on the lines of the one led by Rahul Thursday midnight at India Gate demanding justice to the victims.

In both the cases -- in the gangrape-murder of an eight-year-old in Jammu’s Kathua where BJP lawmakers came out in support of the six accused who tortured, gang-raped and then murdered the minor, and, in the incident in UP’s Unnao, where the father of a woman who has alleged BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar was murdered in police custody by Sengar’s brother Atul Singh -- the party is looking to pin the BJP on the matter.

On Thursday night, Gandhi announced a candlelight march at midnight at India Gate. Flanked by general secretary Ashok Gehlot, Gandhi sent out a strong message to the BJP while thousands gathered in support around him. “This is not a political issue, for us, this is a national issue. We want the government to take action in these cases; we want that women should at least feel safe. You can see people across parties have joined us here tonight,” Gandhi told reporters.

Apart from Gandhi, his sister Priyanka Vadra along with husband Robert, too, were present apart from senior party leaders Ghulam Nabi, Kapil Sibal, Shobha Oza, Ambika Soni, Salman Khursheed, Kumari Selja, Sushmita Dev, Randeep Surjewala.

When accosted by the media and even some Congress workers, Priyanka was seen asking them to leave. “Those who have come here to push and shove, go home,” she said.
