Panic gripped Vaishali Nagar area after a major fire broke out at a bank on Thursday afternoon. The fire supposedly triggered by a short circuit spread through two floors of the bank premises where currency worth crores was kept. But qwing to quick thinking and swift action on part of fire fighters, the cash was saved. However, the fire gutted office items.
The incident occurred at HDFC Bank near National Handloom.
“The fire broke out at around 11.45 am at the bank. The fire started in a false ceiling on the ground floor which was made of wood. The wood quickly caught fire and within no time the fire spread to other parts of the bank. Bank staff along with the customers rushed out of the building,” said fire officer Jalaj Ghasiya.
Eight fire tenders were pressed into service.
“The bank officials informed us about the cash kept in the bank and we first targeted those areas to save the cash. By the time the fire fighting had started, the outbreak had spread to the first floor also. For two hours, the fire fighting continued and around 1.45 pm the fire was completely doused,” Ghasiya added.
The fire gutted the entire first floor of the bank while only half of the ground floor could be saved.
“The cash was kept in drawers and bags which was removed first. Eight fire tenders conducted twenty rounds in total to the filling station. There were several wires in the false ceiling and it is suspected that a short circuit could have caused the fire,” Ghasiya further added.
