A local government body in Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh today imposed a fine of about Rs 4 lakh in total on 13 families for open defecation.

"A government team visited Virpur village and caught people from 13 families defecating in fields or on a hillock outside the village. A fine of Rs 3,95,500 was imposed on them on the spot," said Begumganj Janpad Panchayat's chief executive officer Rima Ansari.

The `culprits' continued with open defecation though a toilet has been built at every house of the village, she said.

"These villagers had been warned on several occasions, but they were not ready to use the toilets at home," said Ansari.
