“He is a martyr and he laid down his life for the country and Kashmir,” said a grief-stricken father as the coffin of his son constable Shameem Ahmad lay in front of him.

The words of M Jamal Sheikh summed up the mood of the people and cops who had gathered to pay last respects to Constable Shameem Ahmad Sheikh, who was killed when militants lobbed a powerful grenade on a joint party of CRPF and police at Nowhatta in sensitive old Srinagar city on Sunday evening.

Every eye became moist when cops sounded the last post to pay tributes to Constable Shameem at District Police Lines (DPL) here.  Leading the nation in paying the homage was deputy speaker of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Nazir Ahmed Khan Gurezi and Director General of Police Dr SP Vaid.

Hailing from Gurez on the Line of Control in North Kashmir’s Bandipora district, the 27-year-old constable is survived by his aged parents, two brothers and two unmarried sisters.

The martyr was laid to rest at his native place, Ajar Bandipora, where thousands of people, including SSP Bandipora Sheikh Zulfikar and other senior police officers attended his Nimaz-e-Jinazah (burial prayers).

“You can well understand how painful the death of a child is for his parents. What can we do? Whatever Allah had written has happened. There is no doubt he is a martyr. He has laid down his life for the country and Kashmir”, said M Jamal Sheikh, father of the slain soldier.

The words of a grief stricken father could act as a morale booster for thousands of the families of policemen who are at the receiving end of the militants. For the last one month, militants have stormed the houses of at least four cops in south and central Kashmir, threatening their families and ransacking their properties.

Director General of Police, Jammu and Kashmir, Dr SP Vaid said that jawans have been facing bullets from the militants who hide behind the stone-pelting mob. “Grenade attack is also part of greater design. We will devise a strategy to deal with it. I am sure that with our experience we will be able to handle it,” he said.

Paying glowing tributes to the martyr, Dr Vaid said his heart goes out to the family which has lost their son. “Such an attack happened last year also when the situation was bad. My heart goes to the family who lost their dear one,” he said.
