A retired Indian Navy officer has been arrested for posing as a Delhi Police officer and stealing a BMW car belonging to a businessman in South Delhi's Mahipalpur area. The accused, Bharat Singh, had earlier attempted to steal cars by asking for lifts but when that modus operandi failed, he thought donning a police uniform might help him.

At 11.58 am on Tuesday, the police was informed about a BMW car being robbed at knife-point at Rangpuri roundabout near Radisson hotel at Mahipalpur. The victim, Khenchand, told the police that he works as a driver with Messrs Gupta HC Overseas Pvt Ltd, an Agra-based firm. In his statement, Khenchand said he had come to the Capital to drop his boss at Indira Gandhi International airport in a BMW X5 SUV (licence plate number UP-80-DZ-9292).

"After he dropped his boss, he had to drive to Gurugram for more work and drove the same car from the airport. As he was approaching Mahipalpur, a man wearing a Delhi Police officer's uniform signalled him to stop," said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, South, Chinmoy Biswas.

Khenchand told the investigating officers that the man was wearing a uniform with two star badges on the shoulder. When Khemchand stopped, the fake police officer asked him for a lift.

Khemchand agreed since it was an officer of the law. Singh sat in the car, and later took out the knife and first snatched the driver's phone and then asked him to leave the car.

Fearing for his life, Khemchand ran out of the car and Singh drove away with his mobile phone.

An FIR was lodged under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Arms Act. The police swung into action and acting on a tip-off, recovered the car when Singh was trying to tow it away with a crane. They found that Singh had served in the Indian Navy till 2001, after which he retired.
