Navratri celebrations culminate with Dusshera also referred to as Dasara or Vijaya Dashami. As the name aptly suggests, Vijaya Dashami (meaning victory) points out to the fundamental fact that truth alone shall triumph. Evil, falsehood, hate, anger or greed must have no breeding ground. This year, Dussehra will be celebrated on September 30.

It is time to recall the inspiring valour of Lord Rama and Goddess Durga to celebrate the triumph of good over evil. Demons Ravana and Mahishasura who were known for treachery and destruction were annihilated by divine forces Rama and Durga respectively to remind mankind that truth and goodness alone shall prevail.

To remind humanity that good is invincible and that evil will cease to exist, people across India celebrate this festival with great devotion.

Mammoth effigies of Ravana are burnt to celebrate the defeat of the demon king at the hands of Lord Rama.

Vijaya Dashami also means the triumph of self-control over ten varied vices that flourish in humans. Only when we overcome our shortcomings, we emerge victorious and the ultimate goal is to attain truth and achieve the absolute. And hence it is imperative to give up the following:

Kama vasana (Lust)

Krodha (Anger)

Moha (Attraction)

Lobha (Greed)

Garva (Over Pride)

Irshya (Jealousy)

Swartha (Selfishness)

Anyaaya (Injustice)

Amanavata (Cruelty)

Ahankara (Ego)

So this Vijaya Dashami, vanquish your shortcomings to emerge as a finer human
