Drunk driver rams car in auto-rickshaw, killing two in Mumbai

The incident happened in Mumbai's Tagore Nagar area.

An auto-rickshaw driver and a passenger were killed and one person was injured after being hit by a speeding Ritz car on Sunday evening in Mumbai's Tagore Nagar area. The deceased have been identified as Lucy D'souza (68) and auto driver Purushottam Prabhu (46) who sustained injuries after the hit.

The Vikhroli police have arrested the 22-year-old driver of the car, identified as Bhavik Ramesh Tharva, a businessman by profession. 

According to police, the incident took place around 8:30 pm on Sunday at Tagore Nagar area, when the victims were going towards Goregaon from Jogeshwari-Vikhroli link road in an auto. Suddenly Ritz car speedily hit the auto from behind causing the death of the passenger and the auto-rickshaw driver. After the accident, the victims were rushed to the local hospital where they were declared dead on arrival. 

"Tharwa was driving the car and was drunk while driving. He was going with his three friends in Goregaon for a party.We have arrested the accused and probing the matter," said Shridhar Hanchate, Senior Police inspector of Vikhroli Police Station.

The Vikhroli police have registered a case against the driver under the relevant sections of Indian Penal Code for causing death by negligence, drunk driving and rash driving.Tharwa was produced in the court on Monday snd was released on bail.
