For residents of satellite town Dombivli January 21 has become a historical date. Three years ago on this day the city with highest literacy rate in Maharashtra became infamous for green rain. To remind the government of this important event and the necessity of taking preventive measures to avert such situation in the future, the MIDC Dombivli residents have organised a silent protest on Saturday.

On January 21, 2014 when Raju Nalawade a citizen from Milapnagar, Dombivli (east) left his home for a morning walk, it had started drizzling, he recalled. Around 7.30am, he started receiving calls from his friends saying the roads at Vicco naka, Dombivli are covered with green water. "I quickly went there. It looked like a green carpet was laid on the roads. There was a stench of chemicals in the air. We even found green water on the terrace also," he adds.

The residents called up Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) and informed them about this unnatural phenomenon. MPCB officials came the next day and took samples of water, soil, trees, etc.

They concluded that due to some mistake in the dyeing process in the dyeing mills of the area, the chemical particles evaporated through chimney. According to them, it was these chemicals that mixed with the rain water and led to green rain.

"The situation is far from better even now with so many blasts and hazardous chemical pollution incidents taking place in Dombivli every year," he says. "Hence, in an attempt to remind the state government that such a thing should not happen ever, not only in Dombivli but anywhere, we have organised this silent protest on January 21," he adds.

On Saturday morning around 9am the residents will gather at Vicco naka with posters in hands. The banners have already been put up in MIDC area. "This government is a sleepy government and we want to wake it up," he says.
