“Hamla toh karna hi hai (We have to carry out an attack).”

This is one of the many statements that are heard in the several phone conversations between the supporters of Dera Sacha Sauda planning to troop into Panchkula and Chandigarh before Friday’s verdict against Dera chief Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh. The conversations reveal how the Dera supporters were planning the mayhem.

The supporters are heard giving instructions for mob mobilisation ahead of the verdict. One such phone recordings accessed by DNA also reveals that directions for gathering a huge crowd in Panchkula may have come from the Dera chief himself.

Two followers are heard discussing the “samaan” to be taken, an apparent reference to weapons and ammunition. “Take the stuff, don’t show off, be discreet. Take them out only when needed...” one of the supporters is heard telling the other in Punjabi.

“Pitaji (Ram Rahim) has especially said not to take his name if anyone asks why they have come. Tell them to say they have come on their own will,” one of the supporters says in the conversation.

The two further plans how to carry out the ‘hamla’ (attack) in Panchkula ahead of the verdict on Friday that sparked violent clashes, leaving 36 dead and over 200 wounded.

He further instructs the person, whom he refers to as ‘brother’, that even the parents of kids should be told they should not take “pitaji’s” name.

The two are also heard discussing that 300-350 people have already been dispatched in two buses and five to six tempos to Panchkula, ahead of the verdict. They also discuss that langar (food) arrangements have to be made for the “sangat” (congregation, referring to the crowd that gathers).

Incidentally, the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Saturday took cognisance of such phone recordings and issued instructions to identify key players from the group who allegedly instigated the mob.

The court also asked for a detailed report on the interception of messages inciting violence, which were circulated by Dera Sacha Sauda, the religious cult headed by Ram Rahim.

“The reports of interception of the messages given by the Dera Sacha Sauda (respondent No.7) inciting violence shall be submitted in this Court in a sealed cover. A supporting affidavit in this regard shall be filed on the adjourned date,” the bench of Acting Chief Justice SS Saron and Justices Surya Kant and Avneesh Jhingan ordered during hearing in the matter on Saturday.

The court has asked authorities to verify whether five persons – Dera spokesperson Aditya Insan, Dhiman Insan, Dilawar Insan and Mohinder Insan (‘Insan’ is a title used by the group’s members) were “instrumental in inciting the crowd to violence.”
