A gang of five dacoits raided a vehicle of an Andheri-based company and took away 58kg of gold biscuits worth Rs15.68 crore while it was being transported from Mumbai to Shirpur in Dhule district in the early hours of Friday.
Posing as policemen, the thugs first intercepted the van owned Sequel Logistic Company near Wadivhare in Nashik and demanded to take the consignment to the nearest police station. When the carriers resisted, the criminals thrashed them and took away the gold at gunpoint.
At the time of going to press, the Wadivhare police had registered a case of dacoity and launched a manhunt for five persons and were yet to make any headway.
According to the police, the vehicle, bearing registration number MH-02 CE-4010, was carrying a cargo of 60kg of gold worth Rs16.23 crore and was headed for a refinery in Shirpur. As it reached Kauti Phata on Mumbai-Agra Highway, a white Logan car started tailing it.
The staff and security personnel transporting the gold have told the police that five men in khaki came out of the Logan and demanded that the vehicle be taken to the police station. When the Sequel Logistic staff refused, the 'cops' thrashed them.
The criminals tied all the men in the cargo vehicle at gunpoint and made off with 58kg of gold biscuits worth Rs15.68 crore. They also snatched two mobile phones from the victims.
Javed Ahmed, one of the security personnel, managed to untie himself after some and freed his colleagues. They then approached the Wadivhare police and lodged a complaint. While the police sealed all the exit points in the area and pressed a dog squad into service, they could not immediately track down the gang.
