Two police constables have been suspended for allegedly helping an undertrial prisoner to escape to his home in Mumbai, rather than take him to AIIMS in New Delhi for medical treatment.

Constables Ashok Kumar and Lalit Negi were suspended yesterday after it was found that they had helped the undertrial prisoner to escape to his home in Mumbai and stay there for three months under the pretext of his medical treatment, a release from police department said.

Jai Prakash alias Prakash Narayan Kandpal, who was lodged in Haldwani jail, was taken by the two constables to Sushila Tiwari hospital when he fell ill on December 16 last year.

As his condition did not improve, the doctors referred him to AIIMS, Delhi.

But instead of taking him to AIIMS, the constables took him to his home in Mumbai, the release said.

The matter came to light when the undertrial did not appear for hearing in a district court here on February 27 and March 4 in connection with a case of fraud.

The undertrial was later brought back after a team was sent to Mumbai.
