The opposition parties in Tamil Nadu on Thursday saw red over the sudden transfer of the CB-CID chief, immediately after it was handed the case of the investigation into the sex scandal involving a woman professor, alleging there was a conspiracy to 'save someone'.

Additional Director General of Police K Jayanth Murali, who was heading the CB-CID wing of the state police, was transferred to Vigilance and Anti-Corruption wing and replaced by ADGP Amaresh Pujari on Wednesday night. The police officer was transferred a day after the case of Nirmala Devi, an assistant professor at Devanga Arts College in Virudhunagar district, alleged to have lured female students to extend sexual favours to officials of the Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) for money and academic progress, was handed to it for probe.

DMK working president MK Stalin said the police officer was shunted out in "a hurry" after the transfer of the sensitive case to the CB-CID. "Who are involved in this case and who are behind it? If this has to be ascertained, and for the truth to emerge, the probe has to be done by the CBI under the supervision of the high court," he said. Expressing shock over the sudden transfer of the police officer, PMK founder Dr S Ramadoss, in a statement, said that he could sense a conspiracy to bury this case.

Meanwhile, the arrested professor, who also dropped the Governor's name twice and claimed to have access to him during her conversation with the girls in the leaked audio clip, also referred to the registrar and collectors in another chat on WhatsApp.

Additionally, the retired IAS officer R Santhanam appointed by Governor Banwarilal Purohit to investigate the scandal has begun his probe in Madurai and inquired with the vice-chancellor of MKU PP Chellathurai and registrar V Chinnaiah about the allegations. Following the criticism over the absence of a woman member in the probe, Santhanam also appointed two women professors from Mother Theresa University and Agriculture College and Research Institute to assist him.
