The NPP and the BJP are to form the next government in Meghalaya, ANI reported on Sunday evening.

"Running a coalition government is never easy but I am confident that the MLAs who are with us are very committed to the state and people, will work towards development of the state," said Conrad Sangma after the announcement was made.

Earlier in the day, UDP has extended a support letter to the NPP-BJP alliance, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma had informed.

The move comes after Congress was the single-largest party in the state. Despite this, a five-party alliance cobbled together by the BJP and led by the NPP is set to come to power in the northeastern state.

Sources informed DNA that the Congress said that they don't have the numbers to form the government.

The NPP-BJP and allies will meet the governor at 5 pm and in all likelihood, Conrad Sangma will be sworn in as the chief minister of the state.

Late last night, however, the Congress had met Meghalaya Governor Ganga Prasad to stake claim to form the next government

With 21 seats, the Congress had emerged as the single-largest party but does not have enough numbers on its side. Here the BJP ally's the Nationalist People's Party (NPP), will be a key player in the formation of government. The party, which got 19 seats, has made great inroads since the last Assembly elections in 2013 when they managed only two.

"There's no choice but for us to go forward with alliances with other regional parties. We are still talking to different parties, have made our proposals and are trying to unite all the leaders on an anti-Congress front. It all depends on them (regional parties) now," said Sangma in an interview with DNA.

Formed by former Lok Sabha speaker PA Sangma, the NPP has made great strides in the Northeast in the last few years. It helped the BJP form governments in Manipur, Nagaland and even Rajasthan. In Meghalaya, the party's stock has risen steadily in the last five years.
