Even as Yogi Adityanath government is making tall claims on improving the law and order in Uttar Pradesh, a woman Congress leader was shot in broad daylight in Baghpat district of Uttar Pradesh.

Three unidentified motor-cycle borne assailants fired bullets at Munni Begum on Monday afternoon when she was inside her house in Ketipura area of Purana Kasba in the district. She died on the spot. The assailants made a good escape after firing indiscriminately in the air.

Munni Begum was former District President of the Mahila Congress. Family members said that her nephew Zahid alias Lamboo was keeping animosity with her over a land dispute. He was currently lodged in jail after being arrested for making three unsuccessful attempts on the Congress leader’s life in the past six years.

Her husband Mobin alleged that she was denied security cover despite several requests to the police after receiving constant threat to her life from Zahid and his associates.

“It seems to be handiwork of hired killers. We have registered a case and sent body for the post mortem. The police have got some clues and we will arrest   assailants soon,” said Jaiprakash, the Supreintendent of Police (SP) Baghapt.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) has demanded a high-level probe into the murder of party leader in Baghpat. "We demand a high-level probe into the murder as well action against those police officials who denied security to her despite threats," said Capt S.J.S. Makker, UPCC General Secretary.
