A resident of Mohali, Seerat Dhillon, 35, allegedly shot her husband Ekam Singh, 40, in cold blood in their home on Saturday night and stuffed his body in a suitcase, and with the help of an auto-rickshaw driver, put it in her BMW to dispose it.

Dhillon is the niece of former Congress MLA from Sardulgarh, near Bathinda, Ajit Inder Singh Mofar, who was defeated in the recent Assembly elections. Mofar is believed to have no connection with the crime, police said. Ekam Singh was the son of Jaspal Singh, a human rights activist. A property dealer, Singh had also set up a stone- crushing unit recently.

The auto-rickshaw driver became suspicious after his hands got stained with blood while loading the suitcase into the car. He informed the police, who recovered the abandoned BMW with the suitcase — located in the boot of the car— outside the couple's house on Sunday morning. The accused, it seems, could not drive the car away.

As a result, police easily traced the BMW to Dhillon and found that the revolver used in the crime was registered in her name. She was arrested for murder and produced in a court, which remanded her to police custody. The police have also booked her mother, Jaswinder Kaur Brar. and brother, Vinay Pratap Singh Brar, for alleged criminal conspiracy and destruction of evidence on a complaint from the deceased's father, Jaspal Singh. The two are absconding.

The couple had been married for 12 years and had two children — an 11-year-old son and a five-year-old daughter. The two children were found in the house during a police raid.

Initial investigations suggest strained marital relations between the couple to be the reason. The couple are believed to have had an altercation on the night of the incident, said the police.

Commenting on the case, Investigating Officer Inspector Baljinder Singh said that the prime accused has been remanded in two days' police custody. "The investigation is on and the two-co accused will be arrested soon," he said. The police are also probing as to who all were present in the house at the time of the incident and who helped her in disposing the body.
