More trouble for Mumbai University (MU) students is on the cards as Vice Chancellor (VC) Dr Sanjay Deshmukh on Tuesday admitted that there would be further delays in the declaration of some of the key results like that of Commerce and Law.

Deshmukh told members of Yuva Sena, Shiv Sena's youth wing delegation, that it would not be possible to declare results on the revised deadline on August 5 and the results of these courses can only be declared by August 15.

Yuva Sena members protested at the university's Kalina campus on Tuesday morning when the VC admitted to further delay. Two other student unions — Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Students' Federation of India(SFI) — also protested at the Vidhan Bhavan and the University's Kalina campus respectively.

The State admitted that the blanket roll-out of the online assessment of answer sheets had caused confusion. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis assured the state legislative assembly on Tuesday that in the future, the state government would implement the system gradually. The issue was raised by former deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar (NCP), who noted that were out for just 171 of the 477 courses. Seeking Fadnavis' intervention, Pawar said the issue had affected the University's reputation and would impact students who wanted to pursue higher studies or seek employment.

Describing the impasse as "serious", Fadnavis said the university had shifted to an online system. "The system would have settled down if it was introduced in stages," he noted, stating that since it was rolled out at one go, it was creating problems as the valuers were not accustomed to online assessment. They were taking time to examine answer sheets and valuers were also difficult to come by. "In the future, we will implement the system gradually," noted Fadnavis.

Shiv Sena and opposition parties made a fresh demand for the resignation by Deshmukh and the state Education Minister Vinod Tawde for the inordinate delays. Shiv Sena legislator Anil Parab has moved a privilege motion against Tawde in the Maharastra legislative council. Tawde said that he would put forth the demands of the ABVP, with respect to the removal of VC, to the Governor and would also inquire into the allegation of non-qualified teachers assessing papers.

While a total of 183 results have been declared so far, 294 results were pending as on Tuesday evening; 2,98,213 answer sheets are yet to be evaluated and 1,08,993 answer sheets yet to be moderated. The Governor met key officials at the university and the state government to chalk out a plan for the next few days to speed up the process.

Help desk for confidential results

Starting Monday, the university has started help desks for students whose admissions in other universities are in a limbo due to delayed results. "A help desk has been set up at the Kalina campus where university officials are verifying the offers students have got from other universities. After confirming them, the university will issue confidential results of these students," said Vinayak Dalvie, Officer on Special Duty (OSD).

Action against delay in NAAC re-accreditation

Minister of State for Higher Education Ravindra Waikar announced that action would be taken against officials responsible for the delay in applying for accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) after its earlier 'A' grade expired in April due to delay in application.
