With an aim to provide water facilities to Jawhar village in Palghar district, the students from the NSS unit of KPB Hinduja College constructed a check dam and soak pit for the villagers.

The college students adopted the village few years back to provide basic facilities to the tribals residing in the village. In their last visit, the students constructed one check dam and five soak pits to save water so that the villagers can use it in their routine and agricultural activities.

Speaking about the project, Saira Banoo Shaikh, Coordinator, NSS, Hinduja college said, "Thirty seven student volunteers from the NSS unit set up a week-long resident camp at the village to construct the check dam and soak pits. Since it is a hilly area, storage of water for later usage is problematic. The check dam, which is three feet in height and 20 feet in length, has been constructed to help over 25 families residing in the village."

Three years back, the village was adopted with an aim to develop it and provide basic facilities to the villagers. The students also conducted an awareness survey related to the water shortage issues the villagers face and came up with a solution based on that, later.

Talking about the experience, Parath Mehta, 18, student, said, "While constructing the facilities and living with them for a week, we experienced the hardships they face, living without access to basic necessities such as electricity, water, and technology to name a few. We felt a sense of satisfaction in being able to help them out, and found immense support and help from the villagers too."

Rafiul Bari, 19, another student, said, "We were happy to see a smile on their faces while returning. Jawhar is one of the backward villages of Maharashtra and the facilities will provide long-term benefits to the villagers."

According to the college authority, they are happy to see the students taking up social responsibility and giving back to the society. Minu Madlani, Principal, Hinduja College, said, "The mindset of the students changed during the course of the initiative. The students have started devoting time to social service. This year the team's agenda was sanitation and cleanliness. The project will help the tribal villagers in future and there will be less water scarcity issues. The tribals will be able to use the water saved for domestic, agricultural, or personal work."

The project is supported by the Hinduja Foundation. Brigadier Hari Chukerbuti, Executive Vice President, said, "Through the rural development project, we wanted to develop facilities to save water in the areas having acute water scarcity. The villagers usually migrate due to water shortage and return to the village in the monsoons. Our priority was to provide a permanent solution to their problems. The initiative helps the college students find out ways in which they can help the less privileged."
