In a rush before the municipal polls this April, the BJP-ruled civic corporations are out to ensure that new projects are being put into place. Expecting the poll schedule to be declared anytime soon, bringing into force the Model Code of Conduct, senior leaders from these corporations are getting new projects ready every day beforehand.

In this regard, North Corporation mayor Sanjeev Nayyar, BJP MP Manoj Tiwari and New Delhi MP Meenakshi Lekhi and local councillor Rajesh Bhatia, inaugurated a parking lot near Karol Bagh metro station on Friday.

The parking lot, which had to be developed as an eight-storey automated multi-level facility was proposed by the corporation over four years ago. Budgeted at Rs 92 crores it was opened as a surface parking lot with a capacity of 350 cars. Work on its development as a multi-level facility is to start in another six months while the deadline spans over two years to be ready by 2019.

"It has been a dream project. There were a lot of hurdles such as changing land use and shifting existing structures to clear the land which took around four and a half years. The DDA is going to fund the project under its urban development fund. We will start the process of tendering once we receive the funds. The multi-level facility will have the capacity of parking 1,000 cars," said Rajesh Bhatia, sitting councillor, New Rajendra Nagar.

He added that the facility will solve the parking woes of the area which gets congested because of traders and shoppers coming to the Karol Bagh market and those going to the nearby Ganga Ram Hospital.

Besides, the parking lot, senior leader also launched a sports facility for children. The foundation stone was laid at Rajendra Nagar metro station. The project, estimated at Rs 35 lakhs, had been in the pipeline for over three years. The corporation now plans to ready it within six months and throw it open to public by September 2017.

"We had to identify the land and get it cleared. Everything is ready for work now which is why we laid the foundation today (on Friday). We will be building a basket ball and volley ball court, cycling and skating tracks," said Bhatia.

Last week, the South Corporation mayor Shyam Sharma had inaugurated a project to ensure the supply of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) in seven west Delhi colonies including Ashok Nagar, Gopal Nagar, Pratap Nagar, Asha Park, Usha Park and ten blocks of Fateh Nagar.

The mayor's office, along with the local RWA, set up a registration camp at Pratap Nagar for residents to sign in for the piped gas connection. The colony lacks other basic civic amenities such as proper drainage and sewage management.

"The project is going to benefit around 20,000 families in the area. We have requested IGL officers to lay the pipelines on a war-footing such that connections could be provided within two months of registration," said Sharma.
