Hundreds of parents from Mumbai are set to join the state-wide agitation for poor implementation of the Right to Education (RTE) Act in Pune, on May 20. This year, despite a high enrollment rate, 37 per cent of the seats reserved under the RTE quota in city schools are lying vacant.
Several parents, whose children failed to secure a seat in any of the city schools under the RTE quota, largely owing to technical glitches in the admission process, are left in the lurch, due to a lack of redressal to their complaints. They are now joining the movement for a more accountable and transparent system of RTE admissions.
"Several children had to bear the brunt of the corporation's apathy in fixing existing issues in the admission procedure. While several students did not get any allotment letter, several others were allotted schools far away from their homes due to a decimal error in the admission software," said Sudhir Paranjape, an activist from the Anudanit Shiksha Bachao Samiti.
Several NGOs across the state will take part in the protest that will gather at the office of the Education Officer in Pune. "If there are technical issues year on year, there should be an audit of the entire system," said Paranjpe, who will lead a group of around 500 parents from the city.
An official from the Education department said that the corporation is in the process of deciding whether another round of admissions can be held.
