Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been exposed after Centre released the documents revealing that the two senior leaders had approached the governor NN Vohra intimating him that Mehbooba Mufti was ready to take oath as the chief minister after the death of her father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed on January 7.

In an RTI reply, ministry of home affairs (MHA) has released Vohra's letter to President Pranab Mukherjee informing him about his meeting with two PDP leaders –Muzaffar Hussain Baig, Lok Sabha MP from Baramulla and Nizam-ud-din Bhat, PDP general secretary –after the death of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed on January 7.

"Before I left Srinagar on January 7 to return to Jammu, a PDP delegation comprising Muzaffar Baig and Nizam-ud-din Bhat met me with prior appointment on the Srinagar airport. Baig informed me that he has brought a letter from his party addressed to me, which intimated the PDP's decision that Mehbooba Mufti would be the next chief minister,: Vohra said in his letter on January 9.

Elaborating, the governor said, Baig explained that he was not handing over the letter to him as he needed to recheck and be fully assured that all the PDP MLAs were on board in regard to the aforesaid decision.

"I informed Baig and Bhat that the new chief minister would require to be administered oath and installed by the end of January 8. In this connection following documents would require to be furnished to the governor:

Resolution of PDP legislature party about its decision to have Mehbooba Mufti as the next chief minister. Communication from the BJP to intimate their endorsement of the PDP's aforesaid decision," Vohra said.

Since PDP and BJP did not give any formal response to governor till January 9 Vohra wrote to the president seeking consent for proclamation of governor's rule and place the assembly under suspended animation.

For the last one month there has been a stalemate in the state as PDP has been taking a moral high ground over the government formation seeking concrete confidence building measures from the Narendra Modi government before Mehbooba could take oath as chief minister.

However the new documents has sparked a political storm with main opposition National Conference lampooning PDP's "moral high ground" over demands and confidence building measures which they claim is to hoodwink the masses in the restive state.

"Fact of the matter is that they had approached the governor to form the government even before the funeral (of Mufti) had taken place. It has become evident that PDP had delayed the government formation because there are internal issues within party over Mehbooba's candidature and second they are creating drama to tell the people they have some sort of ideology and we regret what has happened," Junaid Azim Mattu, spokesman of NC, told dna.
