If your child is studying in a CBSE school in Chennai, then you might have cause to be worried. A report released by the Ministry of Human Resource (MHRD) has revealed that nearly 50% of CBSE schools in Tamil Nadu have poor sanitation facilities.

The study was done by MHRD in conjunction with the National Sanitation Rating Initiative (NSSI). They rated around 3200 CBSE schools across India according to five sanitation colours i.e. green, blue, yellow, black and red. Red denotes schools which have less than 33% of the sanitation norms stipulated and green denotes the best rate (91 to 100%).

Out of the 3200 schools, 231 were from Tamil Nadu. 52 schools fell in the red category and only three made it to the green category. Kendriya Vidyalayas also featured in the red category. The Kendriya Vidyalaya in the IIT campus in Chennai, which is quite popular with parents, also came under the red category as did the ones in Trichy, Dindugal and Kalpakkam. Two Kendriya Vidyalayas – Dharmapuri and Sivaganga – made it to the green category.
