The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday filed the final report pertaining to the 1984 Sikh riots case involving Congress leader Jagdish Tytler.

The final report was filed in front of metropolitan magistrate Rakesh Kumar Singh who was acting as a link for the additional chief metropolitan magistrate (ACMM) Shivali Sharma.

The report was filed after the court had dismissed the clean chit the CBI had given to Tytler. In a December 2015 order, the ACMM had directed the CBI to probe statements made by arms dealer Abhishek Verma who claimed that Tytler was influencing witnesses in the case. At the time, the court had given the agency two months to investigate the matter and file its final report.

The court directed the probe agency to investigate Verma's allegations that Tytler had offered a witness money and also promised to send his (the witness's) son abroad in exchange for his silence.

Then, ACMM Sharma had made it clear that unless there were fruitful results in the case, the superintendent of police would have to explain after the CBI prosecutor kept filing status reports and seeking extension of time to file the final report. Since February 2, 2016 -- the day the report was to be filed, the CBI has sought for an extension three times.

The case against Tytler pertains to the riots at Gurdwara Pulbangash in North Delhi where three people were killed on November 1, 1984, a day after the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Lakhvinder Kaur, whose husband Badal Singh was a victim of the riots, had filed a petition challenging the CBI's report which dismissed all allegations against Tytler.

One of the many allegations against Tytler, the CBI had re-investigated the murder of Badal Singh, Thakur Singh and Gurcharan Singh near the Gurudwara after a court in December 2007 had refused to accept the closure report.

CBI has already filed three closure reports in the case - all of which have been dismissed by the court. Tytler has denied any role in the riots.
