Tamil Nadu political parties including the ruling AIADMK and the principal opposition DMK has expressed shock and disappointment over the Supreme Court order reducing the Tamil Nadu’s share of Cauvery water by 14.75 thousand million cubic feet (TMC) to 177.25 TMC while increasing Karnataka’s share to 284.75 TMC.

Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, a pro-Kannada group, celebrated the apex court verdict by distributing sweets to the people in the Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border near Hosur while protests erupted in some places in Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts in Tamil Nadu over the reduction of Cauvery water share.

AIADMK Rajya Sabha MP A Navaneethakrishnan told reporters outside the Supreme Court that the verdict is a setback to Tamil Nadu considering the reduction in its share of water to 177 TMC from 192 TMC awarded in the Cauvery Dispute Tribunal's final order. He said that the next course of action would be initiated after studying the verdict in-depth. "Our share was reduced on the account of availability of groundwater by 10 TMC and 4.75 TMC additional allocations to Bengaluru city to meet the drinking water needs," he said.

Senior AIADMK leader and Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar said that the government would react after going through the 400-page verdict. “We came to know that the Apex court has ordered the formation of Cauvery Management Board. It is sad that our share of water is reduced by 14.75 TMC,” he told reporters after chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami holding a discussion with senior ministers on the Cauvery verdict.

Leader of Opposition and DMK working president MK Stalin has urged the Palaniswami government to immediately convene an all-party meeting comprising of leaders of farmers association to decide on the next course of the action. “I strongly condemn the AIADMK government for failing to put forward historical evidence to get our share of Cauvery water. The verdict which favours Karnataka will surprise any neutral observer as the state government continued to defy the order of the tribunal and the Apex court,” Stalin said, adding that the AIADMK government has surrendered the hard won rights over the Cauvery river by DMK leader M Karunanidhi.

DMK leader and former PWD Minister Duraimurugan said the SC verdict is an injustice done to Tamil Nadu. "We are shocked by the Apex court verdict. It will turn the Cauvery delta districts into a desert," he said demanding the resignation of the AIADMK government failing to "rightly put forward our just demands".

BJP Tamil Nadu unit president Dr Tamilisai Soundararajan expressed disappointment over the verdict. “Tamil Nadu should take steps to get our due share of water from Karnataka,” she said. Tamil Nadu Congress president Su Thirunavukkarasu, PMK founder Dr S. Ramadoss, MDMK general secretary Vaiko, CPI (M) state secretary G Ramakrishnan and CPI state secretary R Mutharasan also expressed displeasure over the order.

Farmer rights activist P Ayyakannu who held a protest in New Delhi for over 100 days seeking farm loan waiver for Delta farmers has welcomed the verdict. “Though it is slightly disappointing that the quantum of our share has been reduced, we are happy that the court has directed the formation of Cauvery Management Board. The board, once constituted, will ensure the release of Tamil Nadu’s share of water as per the judicial orders and also that Karnataka does not increase its area of cultivation,” Ayyakannu, the president of Desiya Thenindia Nadigal Inaippu Vivasayigal Sangam, said.

Both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have taken precautionary measures to ensure no law and order problem arises over the verdict.

The state-run Tamil Nadu Road Transport Corporation and Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation has suspended its services between two state. The buses were stopped near the state border and passengers had to walk to Karnataka and take a local bus from there.

The usually busy Attibele toll plaza on the road connecting Bengaluru to Tamil Nadu wore a deserted look.
