Caught on camera: Man arrested for forcefully kissing woman at Navi Mumbai's Turbhe railway station

A 43-year-old man was arrested after CCTV footage caught him forcibly kissing a girl at Turbhe station in the satellite city of Navi Mumbai.

As per a Hindustan Times report, the woman was waiting to board a train towards Thane when the accused identified as Naresh Joshi approached her.

Footage shows the woman walking away from the accused, but the accused is relentless in his stalking. He finally approaches her, grabs her by the shoulder and starts kissing her cheek

The report added that the railway police said they had been monitoring Joshi’s movements even before that incident as they found him suspicious. As soon as CCTV cameras showed them what happened, they rushed the spot and nabbed him in the subway connecting the platforms.

Joshi has been booked for sexual harassment under section 354 (A) of the Indian Penal Code. He confessed to the crime during interrogation,” the officer said.

With a total of 6,096 cases of violent incidents reported in Mumbai, the city ranks second after Delhi which reported 15,297 cases in 2016. Maharashtra reported a total of 42,468 violent crime cases last year. Mumbai stands second after Delhi in cases of sexual exploitation against women.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, 2,299 murder cases were registered in Maharashtra of which 147 cases were reported in Mumbai. The city also reported 712 cases of rape in 2016, with Delhi at a record of 1,996 cases.

Crime against women, too, saw a steady rise from 2013 to 2015. While in 2013, the offences stood at 26,129, in 2014 it was 26,693 and in 2015 it was at 30,847. Offences included serious crimes such as rape, murder, kidnapping and abduction, molestation and sexual harassment, among others. As per statistics, the number of cases against children jumped from 6,410 in 2013 to 8,115 in 2014 and 11,676 in 2015 up to December.
