Terrorists ambushed an army patrol injuring three soldiers including a captain in Hajin village even as the Kashmir valley remained under perpetual lockdown on the first death anniversary of Burhan Wani on Saturday.

Police said terrorists attacked the army vehicles when they were on a night patrol at Hajin village in North Kashmir's Bandipora district at 3.30 am.

"Three soldiers including a captain suffered minor injuries. All these vehicles were on a night patrol when they were ambushed near Hajin hospital," said Sheikh Zulfikar Azad, senior Superintendent of Police, Bandipora.

Security forces immediately swung into action and launched the cordon and search operation to track down the terrorists. However, terrorists managed to flee from the spot after the ambush.

The attack comes on the first death anniversary of Hizbul Mujahedeen, poster boy Burhan Wani. Wani along with two of his aides was killed by security forces in an encounter at Bamdoora village of Anantnag on July 8, 2016.

A curfew was imposed in Srinagar and other places to prevent any procession and marches including Burhan Wani's hometown Tral to prevent any law and order problem.

Clashes erupted in parts of Srinagar, Tral and Shopian with people throwing stones at the security forces. Mobile and broadband internet services were suspended across Kashmir valley as a precautionary measure as was the Amarnath pilgrimage from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu on Saturday.

The Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), an amalgam of Hurriyat hawk Syed Ali Geelani, moderate Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik said the state can only suppress people struggling for freedom and justice physically, but can never crush their spirit and aspirations.

"Curfews and restrictions across the valley, blanket ban and gags on communication channels arbitrary arrests and detentions and all other measures expose the fear of the government in the face of people's revolt and resistance," said a JRL spokesman.

Sharif pays tribute to Wani

Islamabad: Pakistan's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday paid tribute to militant commander Burhan Wani, saying his death "infused a new spirit in the struggle for freedom in the Valley.
"The Kashmiri people are steadfast to take their movement to logical conclusion," said Sharif in a message on the first death anniversary of Wani, who was killed in an encounter with Indian security forces last year.
