Can you make 'Make in Maharashtra' or 'make Maharashtra' with not a single college?

An RTI application has brought to light that in the last two years, Maharashtra has sanctioned only one college. The BJP-government, which has coined the slogan 'Make in Maharashtra', has not sanctioned even a single college during its 10-month tenure.

The State Higher and Technical Education Department disclosed the information, following an RTI application by activist Anil Galgali. It said though there was a demand for 298 colleges in two years, only one was sanctioned.

The department received 130 applications to start new colleges in 2014-15. "Out of these, only one was approved. The approved college's name is Jalgaon Vidyapeeth. Out of the pending 129 applications, 46 have been issued letter of intent (LoI)," said Galgali.

The department's Public Information Officer Ranjit Ahire further informed that, in 2015-16, 168 new applications were submitted. However, the BJP-led government in Maharashtra has taken a decision not to approve and grant permission to any one college. These applications have been reverted to the respective universities.

Galgali said that Maharashtra is known as the education hub and many outside students come here to study. "If the government kills this booming sector on flimsy and technical grounds, it will have an impact on the state economy as well. One college in two years is a pathetic ratio. This one college was approved by the previous Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP)-led government. The new BJP government has not approved any college in the last 10 months," said Galgali..

Education minister Vinod Tawde was not available for comments.

NCP spokesperson Nawab Mailk said that it is the agenda of the RSS-BJP not to educate people. "They never give books and pens in the hands of impoverished people. But prefer to give religious books and weapons like trishul. We are not expecting any great thing from this government. They want to take us back into the stone age. In future, this government may close down schools and colleges also," Malik alleged.

Galgali said that this government is full of negativity. "In each and every move, they smell corruption. Because of that, the real intention is getting killed," said Galgali.
