In some relief to formal Naval sailor Manish Thakhur who is serving life imprisonment for murdering his girlfriend Koushambi Layek, a Tata Consultancy Services employee, in a hotel room at Andheri in 2007, the Bombay High Court has expedited the hearing of his appeal challenging the trial court judgment.

A division bench of Justice Ranjit More and Justice Dr Shali Phansalkar Joshi has asked the registry to place the appeal for final hearing and granted liberty to Thakhur to apply for bail if the appeal is not heard within four months from now. The court allowed this liberty after counsel Raja Thackeray appearing for Thakhur withdrew the bail plea filed recently.

A session’s court had on March 4, 2014, convicted 28-year-old Thakur for shooting dead Kaushambi Layek, then a Tata Consultancy Services staffer, in May 2007. In his appeal, filed through advocate Rahul Arote, Thakur has claimed that the prosecution has not concretely established that he was present in the hotel room where the techie's body was found. Thakur's petition says that he was in Goa undergoing training at the time.

Layek, 24, was found murdered in Andheri-based Sun-N-Sheel Hotel on May 14, 2007. According to the prosecution, the duo had checked into the hotel the previous day. Thakur shot Layek dead after she sought to end their relationship, says court documents.

Layekh and Thakur, who was attached to the aeronautical wing of the navy, first met on a train to Thiruvananthapuram where they were attending separate training programmes in 2005. The friendship grew into a relationship through exchanges on then-popular social networking site Orkut.

However, Layek learnt after some time that Thakur was already married. She then sought to end the relationship.

Thakur pleaded with Layek to marry him and that he would divorce his wife. The navy officer convinced Layek to meet him for one last time and the duo checked into the Andheri hotel on May 13, 2007. After killing Layek, Thakur went to Vasco and resumed his training in INS Hansa. He was arrested a few days later.
