Opposition BJP today voiced strong opposition to the TRS government's proposal to provide 12 per cent reservation to Muslims in jobs and education.

"Chief Minister KCR (K Chandrasekhar Rao) statement that they would achieve 12 per cent reservation for Muslims by moving heaven and earth shows he does not have respect for Constitution and courts," Telangana BJP president K Laxman said in a statement here.

Courts in undivided Andhra Pradesh had said quota for Muslims was untenable. The proposal amounts to "cheating Muslims and betraying backward classes", he said.

Laxman was responding to the comments of Rao yesterday on proposed quota to the minority community in government jobs and educational institutes.

The government proposes to pass two bills for providing quota to Muslims and STs and then urge the Centre to include the matter in the 9th schedule of Constitution as done in the case of Tamil Nadu, Rao had earlier said in the Legislative Council.

Laws put in the 9th schedule are insulated from judicial scrutiny.

The quota is proposed to be provided to Muslims on the basis of their socio-economic backwardness and as per the Backward Classes Commission's report, and not on religious basis, the Chief Minister had said.
