A day after the violence in Bhima Koregaon near Pune left one dead, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced Rs 10 lakh compensation for the victim's family.

While announcing the relief, he also said that, “request will be made to SC for judicial inquiry in Koregaon violence matter and CID inquiry will also be conducted on the death of the youth.”

The development comes a day after clashes were reported during Bhima Koreagaon anniversary, which commemorates the 200 years of victory of battle between Peshwas and Soldiers of East India Company consisting soldiers largely from Dalit community.

On Tuesday, the situation in Pune remained under control with Section 144 still imposed in the area. Deepak Kesarkar, Minister of State Home (rural) is in Bhima Koregaon and is holding meeting with senior police officers.

After state transport buses were Hadapsar​ Fursungi​ towns in Pune, bus services  to Ahemadnagar and Aurangabad​ were suspended. 

NCP chief Sharad Pawar has blamed poor management by the authorities for the tension. “People have been going there for last 200 years, nothing like this ever happened. It was expected that more people will be there on 200th anniversary. More attention was needed in the matter” Pawar was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

According to police, while the people in groups were gathering at Bhima Koregaon, a small group from other community carried out a rally in a nearby village. That group had some altercations with the other group which was visiting the memorial and soon the situation turned violent.

The cops said the crowd suddenly became violent and they started pelting stones on vehicles and houses. “The crowd started beating some of the villagers. Some of the houses in the villages were also damaged,” a police officer said.
