Bharat Bandh turns violent in Uttar Pradesh, mob sets ablaze police outpost in Meerut

Bharat Bandh call by Dalit organisations turned violent in different parts of Uttar Pradesh  on Monday. Agitated demonstrators set Shobhapur police outpost on fire in Meerut district and torched and damaged over a dozen buses, private vehicles in other places. Police had to fire in the air to disperse a mob which attacked the police personnel and media persons in Agra.

At several places, demonstrators put up road blocks on state and national highways and tried to stop trains. In Agra, a mob of protestors pelted stones on the police and media persons covering the bandh. A few police and media professionals were injured in the brick-batting. They also made an unsuccessful bid to set ablaze a petrol station.


BSP, Samajwadi Party and Congress workers have also joined protestors. Cops carried out a lathi-charge in Varanasi which left several injured.

The worst hit was Meerut district when Dalit youth burnt Shobhapur Police outpost in Kankarkheda and torched government buses and private vehicles. Police used mild force to disperse the mob. Similar reports trickled in from Saharanpur, Hathras, Allahabad, Kanpur.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has appealed to members of the Dalit community to maintain peace and law and order. “The Central government is aware of the matter and has already filed a review petition in Supreme Court. They may take their grievances to the government instead of indulging in violence,” said the Chief Minister.

The DGP O.P. Singh and the Principal Secretary Home Arvind Kumar have issued directions to all Police Chiefs and District Magistrates to deal firmly with those indulging in violence and arson.
