Amid the new found bonhomie during President XI Jinping's visit, the Indian security establishment is waking up to different kind of advances made by the Chinese in Ladakh region that can have disastrous impact on the geo-politics of the region that so far goes in India's favour.

Besides, the increasing rate of incursions in Indian territory and stand offs, the big worry emanates from the Psy-Ops (psychological operations) that China has started carrying out in the border areas of Ladakh region by showcasing modern gadgetry and good life that is enjoyed by population on their side of the border.

Days before Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit, a team of National Security Advisory Board (NSAB) visited Ladakh and forward areas twice to assess Chinese build up and their psy-war strategy. The NSAB is learnt to have discussed and prepared a report on August 30 that has been submitted to the government.

After the report now is being seen by the national security council secretariat (NSCS) and subsequently will be discussed at the highest level by the China Study Group (CSG) and the National Security Council headed by the National Security Adviser, Ajit Doval to draw conclusions and think of a counter strategy.

Sources said that the natives of Ladakh, who have historical relations with the people on the other side that come from the same ethnic stock often come across each other in vast tracts of unmarked border, are being systematically wooed by the Chinese.

"Our Ladakh region, with the kind of amenities and life-style it has, compares poorly to the massive and modern infrastructure that China have built right up to the border. On top of it, as part of the design they are deliberately stocking up border population with best of gadgets and attires. Apparently, the idea is to hide the dark repressive aspect and breed aspirations for the 'so called' good Chinese lifestyle among our people," the source said.

"You can counter such psy-war only by launching a parallel psy-war. But we are miles away from that. This can be disastrous in the near future," the source added.

The PLA (People's Liberation Army), a security official posted at the Ladakh border said, is playing a double game. While it is building defense structure on their side of the perceived border, it is stopping any such move when any such attempt is made by us by way of posturing and increasing presence of their troops.

During the ongoing stand off at Demchok, the Chinese forced district administration to stop construction work of a canal that is being built to irrigate the dry land and would have given livelihood to people.

"The only answer to Chinese overtures is to upscale infrastructure in Ladakh by providing poor far-flung villagers better amenities and increase the presence of troops and defence equipment in areas close to the border. Or else, you may see in future not so distant that China is putting claim on Ladakh as part of their territory," said the officer.
