Congress candidates contesting election to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Council have been adding glamour to their campaigns, by getting Sandalwood artistes to visit several areas along with them ahead of the polls. The film stars include Umashree (Minister for Kannada and Culture), BC Patil, Mukhyamantri Chandru, Shashikumar, Jayamala, Chinne Gowda (film producer and distributor), Bhavana, Bhavya and Pramila Joshay.

Actress-cum-politician Ramya had canvassed in Jayanagar in support of Congress candidates and left for the USA on a two-month trip  a few days ago. Recently, after appearing with Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi in Pune, Ramya promised Chief Minister Siddaramaiah that she would participate in Congress programmes actively.

Tamil actress Kushboo Sundar campaigned for votes in Tamil-dominated areas in the city. Meanwhile, Kannada film artistes visited CV Raman Nagar and Dasarahalli Assembly constituencies on August 17, Hebbal (near Geddalahalli bus stop) on August 18 and Mahadevapura and KR Puram on the same day. They also visited Basavanagudi and Padmanabhanagar Assembly constituencies and Vijayanagar, Govindarajhanagar and Raja Rajeswari Nagar on August 19. Ironically, these artistes have selected only 10 assembly constituencies while there are 28 assembly constituencies in Bangalore.

Speaking with media persons, character ariste-cum-politician Mukhyamantri Chandru said that the city had lost its glory during the BJP regime and the need of the hour is to regain its lost glory by supporting Congress candidates in the BBMP election. "During the last five years, mayors and deputy mayors belonging to BJP have amassed wealth disproportionate to their income. They earned crores of rupees while the BBMP became bankrupt. The BJP corporators had mortgaged KR Market, Russell Market, Jayanagar Shopping Complex. They wanted to mortage even the Town Hall but Chief Minister Siddaramaiah did not allow them to do it,'' Chandru said.
