Hours after Nitish Kumar-led Janata Dal-United (JD-U) parted ways with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and his "bade bhai" Lalu Prasad Yadav, the latter raked up a 26-year-old murder case against his "chhote bhai", raising a question mark on Nitish's "zero tolerance policy against corruption".

"It was November 16, 1991, the polling day of a mid-term Lok Sabha election, when one voter Sitaram Singh was murdered at one of the polling booths in Barh. A case was lodged in this connection by one Ashok Singh and Nitish was made an accused in the case," a source said. Ashok Singh had accused Nitish and others of murdering Sitaram Singh, when the latter had refused to vote as per their wishes.

A court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Barh, took cognizance of Nitish's involvement in the matter and ordered for trial against him under Sections 147, 148, 149, 302 and 307 of the Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act in the said case, lodged in Pandarak police station in Barh (Patna).

The case was later transferred to the Patna high court, where it was first heard by late Justice Seema Ali Khan and is currently being heard in the court of Justice AK Tripathi.

Lalu said, "Hatyachar (killing people) was much bigger crime than bhrashtachar (corruption). Nitish has also mentioned these details in his affidavit filed with the Election Commission of India, so where does he stand on his morally high ground against corruption?"

It may be recalled that Lalu, along with his son and deputy CM of Bihar Tejashwi Prasad Yadav and wife and former CM Rabri Devi, have been named accused in an FIR lodged by the CBI in a corruption case related to land for Railways' hotel deal. Lalu is accused of wrongfully allotting tenders to hotel businessmen in exchange of prime properties in Bihar.

It was after Tejashwi's name figured as an accused in the said FIR, that the ultimate warring between the JD-U and RJD commenced after the former sought Tejashwi's public rebuttal on the allegations, and concluded with the disintegration of the rocky alliance on Wednesday.
