In a tragic accident, 14-month-old boy fell from the second floor of a building in Byculla, to his death. The child was apparently playing near the window and slipped through the gap in the box grill meant for drying clothes. Byculla police have registered a case of accidental death and are probing the case from all angles.

According to them, Mikayan Athanawala was playing inside the bedroom of his family's second floor apartment at Victoria Terrace 3 at Sant Savta Mali Marg, Byculla (east) on Wednesday. At around 3.30 pm, he supposedly climbed onto the window from the bed placed nearby and fell through the grill. Mikayan was rushed to Bombay Hospital but succumbed to his injuries on Thursday.

In his police statement, Hamza Athanawala, the father, claimed that the mother was not inside the bedroom.

"The boy first fell from second floor window and landed on the awning of the window on the first floor. From there, he fell to the ground, head first," said Jivraj Bareja, a local resident, who rushed to the baby's aid, adding. "As soon as we heard a loud thud, we rushed to the spot and found the boy bleeding profusely from his head. The family rushed him to Balaji hospital first and he was later shifted to Bombay hospital."

Senior Police Inspector Avinash Shingte of Byculla police station said, "The family had kept base of the window grill uncovered to be able to dry clothes. We are probing the case from all angles, though the family have denied any hint of foul play. So far, we have registered a case of accidental death. We have taken the father's statement and we will take the mother's statement if required."

When DNA contacted the family, one of the members said, "We are mourning the death of our child and are in no state to comment on the incident."
