Social media is often a very emotive place. Reactions are instant and comments are heated. The attack on the resident doctor in Dhule was one such incident where the brutal video went viral. With resident doctors on strike since then in public hospitals across Maharashtra, a lot has been written about the patients but a Thane doctor who completed his MBBS and MD from the Topiwala National Medical College attached to the Nair Hospital has stepped in to give perspective.

“The distribution of resources in our health system is not the same. In the anger against the system the resident doctors become the target,” Dr Nitin Patankar said in a Facebook post.

It was a mob of over 30 relatives of the patient that attacked the Dhule doctor. Dr Rohan Mhamunkar, seriously injuring him and damaging vision in his one eye. “If the 30 people would have introspected about the cause of the incident then they would have also realised that the driver who caused the accident is responsible, the shoddy construction by the contractor as well as the corporator who commissioned the work are all responsible,” he explained.

He also said each and every individual has a role to play in the health care system. “When a cardiac patient comes to the hospital the condition is a result of years of bad eating habits and lack of exercise. The individual, his family members, the social circle are all as responsible,” Dr Patankar added.

In his post, which has several comments, he emphasised how the resident doctors are the easiest targets in all this. The death of a patient is the culmination of a chain of events that involves a lot of people, he explained, each of who should be equally liable and worthy of our anger.

While the administration and the court have both assured the resident doctors more security, they have consistently refused to return to work till situation on the ground improves. As an ultimatum, the doctors were also asked to resign. Backing their demand, Dr Patankar said, “If resident doctors can’t get enough security, why is it that corporators and politicians get Z+ security?”

“If people are so angry then they should also change their lifestyle. If the society is healthy then there would be no need for doctors,” he signed off.
