Mukul Roy, the all-India Vice President of the Trinamool Congress, set the tone right at the beginning during his address at the Martyr's Day rally on Thursday. “2019 will be an important year for all of us, we are going to capture Delhi,” said Roy.

It underlined what Trinamool Congress party supremo Mamata Banerjee said at the Martyr's Day rally and gave a clear indication of dabbling in national politics from now on and eye the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Mamata's closeness to Lalu Prasad Yadav, Nitish Kumar and Arvind Kejriwal is now known among all political circles. However, she squashed all expectations of people who viewed her as a prime ministerial candidate of a federal front.

“People want to see me as a Prime Minister of this country, but I want to tell them that I am happy in my state. I am a very small person to become a Prime Minister of this country. But, at the same time, I would want the Centre to allow strengthening of regional parties. I would love to work with Lalu Prasad Yadav, Nitish Kumar and Arvind Kejriwal in future,” Mamata said, igniting hopes of a non-BJP, non-Congress front to challenge the ruling party at the Centre in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

July 21 is a significant day for the history of Bengal for the past 23 years as it turns out to be the largest congregation of the Trinamool Congress to observe the Martyr’s Day. Way back in 1993, 13 people were shot by the police, during a rally organised by the West Bengal Youth Congress under the leadership of the now Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee demanding Voter’s Identity Card to be made the sole required document for exercising one’s franchise.

On Thursday, lakhs assembled at the Victoria Memorial to hear Mamata speak and find out her plans for the party this year.

Unlike her usual self, Banerjee seemed a bit mellowed down, shunning a fiery speech and instead narrating her expectations from the party. She gave out a stern message to her party workers that the party line should not be crossed. “Corruption, irresponsible behaviour will not be tolerated at any cost. Workers have to abide by party discipline. You have to always remain available to help the common people,” said Banerjee.

She avoided the usual acidic attacks on the Left and the Congress and instead directed all her ire against the Centre for meddling in all activities of the state government.

“By meddling into every activity of the state, the Centre is disrupting the federal structures of the state. There are so many states, including ours, which is debt-ridden. These states are victims of wrong economic policies or because of the erstwhile governments. There is very little effort by the Centre to write-off this debt,” added Banerjee.
