The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday intensified its efforts to corner the Congress over the Hindu terror issue, trying hard to paint the Opposition party as ‘anti-Hindu’. BJP president Amit Shah demanded an apology from Congress president Rahul Gandhi as he used the acquittal of the five right-wing activists in the 2007 Mecca Masjid blast as a lever, on Wednesday accusing the Congress of having defamed the country.

In Bengaluru on a campaign spree, Shah said, “After the Mecca Masjid blast case court verdict, it has become clear that the Congress government of Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh had conspired to defame the nation in the name of saffron terror and Hindu terror.”

Shah said that Gandhi should apologise for the Congress’ conspiracy to defame the nation. “P Chidambaram, Sushil Kumar Shinde, Salman Khurshid etc should also apologise for misleading the nation and the world in the name of Hindu and saffron terror,” Shah said.

Hailing the Narendra Modi-government for having done more work in four years than the four generations of Congress governments, Shah told BJP workers, to go out and spread the message of the government’s good work.

“Rahulji, terror has no religion. Now, Congress says we never used these words. Many Congress leaders including chief minister Siddaramaiah are on record using these terms,” he said.

Following the BJP attack in the wake of the Mecca Masjid blast verdict on Monday, the Congress had said there was nothing called ‘saffron terror’ and asserted that terror cannot be linked to any religion or community. The party had also asserted that neither Gandhi nor the party ever used the phrase. The Congress had reacted in reply to the BJP attack over it following the acquittal of right-wing activist Aseemanand and four others in the 2007 Mecca Masjid blast in Hyderabad.
