Under pressure, Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) led by Jammu and Kashmir Governor NN Vohra has decided to file a review petition against the National Green Tribunal (NGT) order on the annual pilgrimage to the holy shrine.

The NGT had last year declared the Amarnath cave shrine area a "silence zone."  After anger swept across the country over its order, the NGT had clarified that due silence has to be maintained only in front of the Shiv Lingam in the cave shrine.

In the 34th meeting of Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board, it decided to file a review petition against the NGT order. Presided over by Governor NN Vohra, the board discussed the implementation of the directions recently passed by the NGT in regard to the conduct of Amarnath Yatra and the further course of action on the issue.

“After deliberations, the Board decided to file a Review Petition against the NGT’s directions”, an official spokesman said.

SASB also announced that this year the annual pilgrimage to Amarnath cave shrine will start from Jyestha Purnima that falls on June 28. The 60 days pilgrimage will conclude on Shravan Purnima (Raksha Bandhan), August 26, 2018.

Situated in a narrow gorge at the altitude of 3,888 metres, the holy Amarnath cave is accessible from two routes in Kashmir Valley. The 46-km Pahalgam–Holy cave trek is an ancient pilgrimage route which is covered in five days. There lies the ice lingam of Lord Shiva that is formed naturally and waxes and wanes with the moon. The new 14-km Baltal-Holy cave route is now preferred by the pilgrims since it is shorter though steep, and journey can be completed in a day.

"Keeping in view its foremost concern to safeguard the safety and security of the pilgrims, the Board decided that 60 days long Yatra would commence on June 28, 2018, on the auspicious day of Jyestha Purnima, as per Hindu Calendar. As per continuing traditions,  it will conclude on Shravan Purnima (Raksha Bandhan) on August 26, 2018", said the spokesman.

Considering the carrying capacity of the existing tracks and other available infrastructure in the Yatra area, the Board decided that 7500 Yatris, per day per each of the two routes, excluding Yatris who would travel by helicopters, would be allowed to secure Advance Registration for the pilgrimage.
