His wife was injured in the Amarnath terror attack, but instead of inquiring about her well being, ambulance driver Dinesh Gosavi went on duty to take the bodies of those killed in the attack to their homes.

"All the pilgrims were friends and are connected to my wife Pushpa. The Sonkar and Thakur families have suffered irreplaceable loss," the 52-year-old said, referring to the deceased Nirmala Thakur and Usha Sonkar. "I did not want the affected families to scout for ambulances to ply the bodies. I thought I should drive them back from the helipad myself."

Gosavi runs a private ambulance service and was present at the Reliance Thermal Power Station in Dahanu as the bodies arrived on Tuesday. He first drove the bodies to the Sonkar and Thakur residences and later to the public hall where they lay as families, relatives and locals paid their respects.

His wife Pushpa sustained injuries on her back and hand in the terror attack. She underwent a surgery in Kashmir on Monday morning and a bullet was removed from her right hand.

Gosavi said he spoke to Pushpa on Monday at 8.30 am and later around 10.30 pm, after the incident. "She was just able to tell me that she was fine and had sustained minor injures, before the call got disconnected," Gosavi said. "Since then I have been trying to call her. Inquiring about my wife was not a priority for me when the bodies arrived. I can inquire about her later and I am sure she will come home in a couple of days."

Pushpa is a bank agent and loves to visit religious places. "Every year the group visited different places of pilgrimage," Gosavi said. "This was the first time they went on Amarnath yatra. I never imagined the journey would prove to be the last one for some of them."
