Following a report on Friday about an autistic child being abandoned with an auto driver by parents at the Alibaug beach, the parents came forward to take home their child on Friday afternoon at Alibaug police station.

Meanwhile, the Forum for Autism (FFA) a parent support group working in the field of autism for the past two decades has come forward to help the child.

According to reports, the child was left behind with an auto driver by an unidentified person. He took the child to the Alibaug police station where the policemen found Rs 300 and a letter from the parents expressing their inability to take care of the child and seeking pardon. However, after reading the news report, the parents themselves walked into the police station on Friday afternoon to take their child home.

A police official of Alibaug police station said, “The parents came along with their second child to the police station and said they regretted leaving their autistic child abandoned with the auto driver. The parents said that the doctors had said their child could not be cured. They said that they were not financially capable of taking care of their child, and so took such a step. They came with the child's Aadhaar card and proof to claim their child, who is now at a remand home in Karjat. After due procedure, they will be handed over the child.”

Soon after news of an autistic child being abandoned by parents emerged, many organizations came forward to help the child. The FFA circulated the news on social networking sites to trace the parents and have offered to counsel and offer them emotional and financial support.

In a statement to the press, the FFA stated, “A Vashi based school for children with Autism that is closely associated with FFA has offered to provide free therapy services to the child. Another FFA core group parent has offered help through the Lions club. The FFA hopes that the parents are found soon and the child is reunited with them. FFA would like to take this opportunity to reach out to other families that may be going through similar hardships and help them too. We have reached out to the police and given them FFA's contact details so that the parents can approach us for emotional and financial support. We have also informed the police that in the event that the home where the child has been placed feels the need, FFA will be in a position to try and make appropriate support available for them to best look after the child with autism.
