Alarmed at the recovery of weapons from a truck ferrying local goods from across the Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) to Uri in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, the Centre has decided to install full body truck scanners at the earliest at two trading points – Salamabad and Chakkan Da Bagh.

The incoming goods trucks which had gone to Chakoti in PoK were searched at Uri. A Chinese pistol, two magazines with 14 rounds of ammunition, four AK magazines with 120 rounds and two Chinese grenades were recovered from a truck bearing registration number JK03B 1586.

The weapons procured were from a terrorist operative in Chakoti and was supposed to be delivered to militants in south Kashmir. The weapons were hidden in a camouflaged cavity of the truck designed especially for hiding arms and ammunition.

"We have taken the recovery of weapons very seriously. The two scanners will be installed at Salamabad trading point on Uri – Muzaffarabad and Chakkan Da Bagh on Poonchh – Rawalakot route at the earliest. We are aiming to install them by year-end," said a government source.

The full body scanners, big enough for the full truck to go through, are capable of scanning fully loaded trucks within minutes and detect if it is carrying any weapons, explosives, narcotics or even fake Indian currency notes (FICN).

Though approved during UPA-II government's time when P Chidambaram was the union home minister, the installation of the body scanners was hanging due to various technical glitches and security implications.

However, worried at the continuous flow of weapons and explosives inside the valley, the Home Ministry has decided to fast track the installation of full body truck scanners.

"The full body scanners are a must as it is impossible to manually check scores of trucks that pass through these trading points daily. These trucks carry a varied range of items, including aromatic stuff, even dogs. Hand-held detectors are not useful in detecting smuggled explosives or narcotics. These would also save traders from getting their sealed goods getting unsealed for checking and scrutiny," sources said.

"All the issues have been sorted out and the procurement process is at an advanced stage now. The scanners are being supplied and installed by an Indian company that has procured the know-how and key parts from outside.
