In what could be the beginning of airing sports events on all channels of All India Radio (AIR) reaching the remotest parts of the country, Prasar Bharti has decided to telecast the upcoming India vs South Africa ODI series through all AIR channels, including local channels.

The One Day series is beginning from February 1 and will go on till February 16.

So far, it was only the FM Gold channel of Akashvani, which has a limited reach, that played cricket commentary. The latest match, however, will be telecast on all channels. There are around 420 channels of the public broadcaster across the country.

This was decided after feedbacks were received from remote parts of the country about not being able to listen to cricket commentary. "Extending the range of sports commentary to all channels was a decision taken by Prasar Bharti. If the feedback is good, it would be extended to all matches and sports events after this," said a source privy to the development.

"FM Gold reaches only till a certain area. After that the signals become weak. It is only medium wave that reaches remote parts and border areas, which is why it was decided that even the local channels should play the upcoming match series," the source added.

Sports events are the most heard programmes on radio, specially in places that do not have access to television. Given the scenario, the public broadcaster has decided to expand its reach.

Prasar Bharti is the autonomous body under Information and Broadcasting Ministry, which functions as the public broadcasting system in the country. It has All India Radio and Doordarshan under it.
