After scrapping off the use of red beacon atop all government vehicles, Captain Amarinder Singh-led Punjab government has now barred all its MLAs and local leaders from laying foundation stones of any projects across the state.

The government has also directed all departments to ensure that none of the inauguration plaques bear the name of any individual or office-bearer. It will only have details of the project.

The government notification allows only the President, Vice President, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Speaker of Lok Sabha, Central Cabinet Ministers, Chief Minister, Chief Justice and judges of the High Court, Speaker Punjab Vidhan Sabha, and Cabinet Ministers of the state to lay the foundation stones or inaugurate projects.

The notification comes after the CM's announcement in his first Cabinet Meeting where he vowed to put an end to red-beacon culture and the use of names of any political leader on the inauguration plaques.

As part of its austerity measures, the fund-starved Punjab government has also directed all district administration officials to ensure that least expenditure is incurred while organising functions for project inaugurations. It had earlier banned the use of helicopters by ministers to attend any of the government events.

However, the state which has been struggling to put an end to the VIP culture has been facing resistance from its own Ministers who have stoked controversies. Soon after the government was formed, one of the Cabinet Ministers Sadhu Singh Dharmkot had reprimanded Principal of a government school in Nabha after his name was placed third on the inaugural plaque of the building.

There were murmurs of discontent among other Cabinet Ministers too.
