VK Sasikala-led AIADMK’s Amma faction on Tuesday raked up the ‘Sahara papers’ issue to defend itself against the allegation of distributing money to voters in the cancelled RK Nagar bypoll.
A day after hitting out at the BJP government at the Centre for the first time following the Election Commission’s decision to cancel the by-poll and an Income-Tax raid on its Health Minister Dr C Vijayabaskar, AIADMK’s mouthpiece Dr Namadhu MGR said that a document seized during an I-T raid at Sahara Group companies allegedly showed payment of Rs 55 crore to the then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
“When attempts were made to file a case based on the papers, the Supreme Court refused to accept loose sheets as evidence,” it said, pointing out that the I-T Department supposedly seized a paper showing the distribution of Rs 89 crore to voters and leaked it to the media. “To stop the RK Nagar by-poll, they conspired to create a fake document. That the Election Commission accepted it is worse,” it said.
