Reacting to an attack on a professor of the Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) under the Delhi University (DU), left-wing students' organisation AISA today alleged that the ABVP perpetrating such crimes and showing off its muscle power had become a regular affair.

"This is not the first time the ABVP has abused its position of power and has beaten up a professor. The incidents of violence by the ABVP are increasing day-by-day. They have made the campus unsafe," alleged Kawalpreet Kaur, the DU AISA president, in a release.

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) is the students' wing of the BJP.

The Maurice Nagar police station had, on July 14, filed an FIR against ABVP member and a student of SRCC, Pradeep Phogat, for allegedly assaulting Professor Ashwani Kumar for giving him 'zero' in the internal assessment.

The college administration had said Phogat was denied marks because of his poor attendance.

The release also referred to a previous instance, in which the ABVP's Satindar Awana had allegedly thrashed a professor on being denied permission to use the swimming pool on the SRCC campus.

"When a students' union representative assaults professors openly, how can common students be safe? We demand Phogat's immediate rustication," said Kaur, adding that it was nothing but a "display of muscle power".

The AISA also accused Delhi Police and the DU administration of "sitting on the issue", which it claimed had resulted in the frequent occurrence of such incidents.

"The DU not just silently watches these incidents of goondaism, but gives full impunity to these groups. We believe that such acts of violence and intimidation of professors cannot be done without the full support of Delhi Police, who takes order from the BJP government," the students' body said.
